DESCRIPTION:Contemplative Pedagogy and the Transformation of Education  A talk by Daniel Barbezat  Tuesday\, Sept. 30\, 2014\, 5:00 - 6:00 pm    Blue Ridge Parkway Ballroom\, Plemmons Student Union  Appalachian State University\, Boone\, NC  Open to the public  Dr. Daniel Barbezat\, co-author of “Contemplative Practices in Higher Education: Powerful Methods to Transform Teaching and Learning” will speak at Appalachian State University Sept. 30 from 5 to 6 p.m. in Plemmons Student Union.    His address will be held in the Blue Ridge Parkway Ballroom. The public is invited.    Barbezat’s lecture will explain what is meant by “contemplative pedagogies” and how first-person critical inquiry can cultivate better discernment and attention in students\, provide the means for deepening their understanding of the material they are studying\, and foster environments to inquire and live meaningfully. It will also explore how contemplative pedagogy can be a powerful way in which educators work together to reclaim the transformative nature of education.    Examples of contemplative practices used in education include reflective writing and journaling\, meditation or movements that quiet the mind and strengthen attention\, expressive arts\, deep listening\, storytelling and mindfulness.    Barbezat is professor of economics at Amherst College. He also is executive director of The Center for Contemplative Mind in Society\, the national hub for contemplative teaching and learning in higher education. He has lectured and led workshops on contemplative learning and pedagogy throughout the United States and Canada.    Barbezat’s lecture is sponsored by Appalachian’s University College and a grant from The Center for Contemplative Mind in Society.

SUMMARY:The 6th Annual ACMHE Conference
DESCRIPTION:&nbsp;    6th Annual Conference of the Association for Contemplative Mind in Higher Education:  Intention\, Method\, and Evaluation  October 10-12\, 2014University of Washington\, Seattle\, WA$332 - $485 (ACMHE members pay a lower rate)        Faculty\, staff\, and administrators throughout higher education are employing contemplative practices for many reasons. These include sharpening attention; creating environments that enhance the well-being of all; addressing inclusion and access for all in support of the vibrant diversity of our institutions; deepening engagement and learning of subject matter; reflecting on and supporting meaning-making; considering the wider impacts of our actions; and ultimately supporting the development of a more just and compassionate society. Given the breadth and depth of these many intentions\, the types of practices used are extremely diverse\, and their assessment needs to be approached with great sensitivity. Assessment of practices designed to develop attention\, for example\, will be different from assessment of those practices designed to increase conceptual understanding or develop compassion and creativity.  This conference seeks to investigate the relationship between the intentions of contemplative methods and their effectiveness. How might the development and evaluation of these methods be guided by what has been discovered about the many ways we learn\, the creation of meaning\, and the development of meaningful assessment? How might contemplative practices inform new ways of evaluating effectiveness?  Presentations at the 2014 ACMHE Conference will examine many topics relating to contemplative inquiry in higher education\, but will emphasize investigations of intention\, method\, and evaluation. We will also explore the relationship between contemplative education and other approaches that share an emphasis on awareness\, experience\, inquiry\, and transformation (e.g.\, holistic education\, transformative education\, feminist pedagogy\, critical race theory)\, as well as the results of evidence-based studies throughout higher education that can challenge and deepen the use of contemplative practices inside and outside the classroom.        Keynote Address  The conference keynote will be delivered by Dr. Peter Felten\, Assistant Provost and Professor of History at Elon University\, and Executive Director of Center for the Advancement of Teaching Learning and the Center for Engaged Learning at Elon.        Networking and Connecting at the Conference  ACMHE conferences are more than an opportunity to present relevant work and gain insights into current contemplative pedagogy methods and practices–they provide a space for higher education professionals from different regions\, disciplines\, and offices to meet and connect with one another.    In order to foster these connections\, we have introduced Home Groups as a feature of the 2014 ACMHE Conference. On Friday night\, at the start of the conference\, participants will have the opportunity to meet in a small group arranged by geographic region and talk about their backgrounds\, interests\, and plans for the conference. Specific times throughout the conference will be designated for Home Groups to reconvene and discuss what they’ve learned and experienced during Parallel Sessions and other conference sessions. We hope that this structure will provide participants with a sense of continuity and connection as they move through the weekend\, and also with a means of continuing their connections when they return home.    In addition to the Home Groups\, the conference aims to nurture a supportive and lively environment for exchanging ideas through interactive presentations\, thematic paper presentations\, experiential contemplative practice sessions\, panel and plenary presentations\, and open\, unstructured time for conversation.    &nbsp;    Presenters and participants are invited to submit related papers to The Journal of Contemplative Inquiry (ISSN: 2333-7281)\, which will dedicate a future issue to the topics of intention\, evidence\, and evaluation. If you have questions\, please contact Mind & Life and/or visit the event's website.    The Mind &amp; Life Institute's International Symposium for Contemplative Studies brings together scientists\, scholars\, artists\, and contemplatives to explore clinical science\, philosophy\, humanities\, education\, economics\, the arts\, and other domains. These distinct\, though overlapping\, fields of research and scholarship focus on advancing our understanding of the human mind and how training the mind through contemplative practices can lead to valuable insights that promote a reduction in suffering\, enhanced health and cognitive/emotional functioning\, and increased social harmony. It has become clear that a multidisciplinary integrative approach is critical for understanding the mind and its effects on health\, ethical behavior\, and society at large. The International Symposium seeks to encourage and help shape a cohesive interdisciplinary field of contemplative studies in which basic and applied science\, scholarship\, education\, the arts\, and contemplative traditions collaboratively develop an integrated way of knowing.    The 2014 International Symposium for Contemplative Studies will begin the evening of Thursday\, October 30\, 2014\, and will conclude in the early afternoon of Sunday\, November 2nd. The program will include keynote addresses by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama; Diana Chapman Walsh\, president emerita of Wellesley College; Richard Davidson\, director of the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin\, Madison; Amishi Jha\, director of contemplative neuroscience\, the Mindfulness Research and Practice Initiative\, at the University of Miami; Anton Zeilinger\, quantum physicist\, University of Vienna; and Tania Singer\, director of the department of social neuroscience at the Max Planck Institute. Master lectures by several distinguished scientists\, scholars\, artists\, and contemplative teachers will also be presented.    Individuals and groups will have the opportunity to submit proposals for individual paper\, panel\, or poster presentations\, reflecting the most current contributions to the ever-growing field of contemplative studies. Also featured will be contemplative art performances and exhibits\, as well as continuous contemplative practice opportunities. Thank you!    How can we work together to create educational systems that promote the success and well being of all students? Together we will re-envision education by exploring strategies for personal and social transformation that are drawn from the contemplative and transformative education movements.  Daniel Barbezat\, Director of the Center for Contemplative Mind in Society and Professor of Economics at Amherst College\, served on the pre-conference planning team along with Grace Bullock (Mind &amp; Life Institute)\, Adi Flesher (Garrison Institute)\, Sheryl Petty (Brown University)\, Emiliana Rodriguez (AtentaMente)\, and Rona Wilensky (PassageWorks Institute). They've invited wonderful speakers to help participants explore how to work together to create educational systems that promote well-being for all.  Contemplative education integrates practices that encourage self-reflection\, compassion\, openness to experience\, and an ability to understand one's perceptions and actions--skills that are critical to personal and social transformation. Transformative education address issues of equity\, social justice\, and lasting change\, not only when individuals are within school systems\, but also when they move beyond them.    At this one-day conference--the pre-conference of the Mind &amp; Life Institute's 2014 International Symposium for Contemplative Studies--we will explore the issues and barriers to personal and social transformation in educational systems\, and work collectively to identify solutions at the individual\, classroom\, systemic\, and community levels.
